Common Marketing Mistakes and How to Work Through Them

Marketing is critical when it comes to your business, a lot of times I see people struggling to market themselves.

In this week's blog of Aligned & Ambitious, I’m diving into three common marketing mistakes you probably are making, and how to work through them. I’m also sharing this insight based on how I emerged in the digital marketing world and ultimately self-taught myself a lot of marketing strategies and tactics.

But before we dive on in, let me introduce myself. My name is Taylor Slango and I’m the host of Aligned & Ambitious Radio and a business coach who helps women make major bank through their own online businesses.

So if you’re an ambitious millennial, wanting to get more out of life and learn how to combat those who doubt you along the way, stick around. This blog post is for you!

And today, I’ll be covering how you as an entrepreneur can have the proper tools and knowledge behind marketing to grow your business! Keep reading to learn more.

Common Marketing Mistakes and How to Work Through Them, Point #1: You are probably not looking at marketing as a holistic strategy that influences every area of your business and life.

A lot of times, I see people making the marketing mistake that they should only be marketing when they’re trying to sell. That’s a huge mistake to be making, you should be marketing yourself all the time. Maybe not directly marketing something you’re selling, but every day you should be marketing your energy, personality, freebies, testimonials, and more.

In some way shape or form you should be marketing yourself every day, that way when it comes to market paid products, people are willing to buy. People think when they are launching that’s when they will market, but the truth is marketing is really about marketing you and your expertise. When you’re not in a launch or promotion phase, you still have to market what you do otherwise people won’t know what you do, how you can help, or why they should listen to you. It’s important to have a rhythm, for example, set up a schedule where on Mondays you market a podcast episode. On Tuesdays, you market a client case study, on Wednesdays you market a freebie, so on. Have your marketing strategy in rotation so you don’t have to think too much about it, but you’re also not letting your marketing slip through the cracks.

Common Marketing Mistakes and How to Work Through Them, Point #2: You are most likely missing the mark on nailing your messaging.

Another marketing mistake is not having that strong message conveyed to your audience. You have to communicate to your audience why they should listen to you, what their pain points are, and paint out the transformation for them. Emotion is what sells, you want your audience to feel understood, validated, and supported. You are the person who has been there and been through their struggles, you are a real-life example of overcoming those struggles and making it out the other side. That’s why your audience should listen to you. This will make them passionate and confide in you, which naturally leads to the sale.

I talk about authentic sales a lot, it’s not just about the selling piece, it’s about things you do before you get to the sale. Your messaging is a big piece of this, your messaging needs to cut through the noise and speak right to the soul of your ideal client. My biggest tip for you is the more specific you can get to your messaging, the better. Here’s an example of what wouldn’t speak to your clients' soul vs. what would:

“I’m going to help you start the business of your dreams.”

Instead, say something like, “I know you're sick of requesting off work and buying your time from someone else, so I will help you build a business that gives you complete time and location freedom so you can spend your life actually living.” I guarantee that the second example would reach and resonate with more people.

Common Marketing Mistakes and How to Work Through Them, Point #3: You’re not putting strong energy behind your marketing.

Oftentimes people make the marketing mistake of not having a strong belief in what they’re offering. As I mentioned earlier, marketing is all about you, who you are, and what you do. If you don't have strong energy behind that and don't have a belief in what you are marketing, you will have a hard time selling anything. You have to believe in yourself literally more than anybody else does. I don't need anyone to believe in me to help me believe in myself, I don't need validation.

Since I can put that energy behind my marketing, it helps other people believe in me too. Energy can be transmitted even through a screen. It starts from an energetic place, it’s because my energy is magnetizing and I'm putting that behind strong messaging and behind holistic strategy. Something that helps me get more behind this strong belief is simply saying it out loud. Words are powerful, the more you speak out positive affirmations, the more you will feel and believe it.

Common Marketing Mistakes and How to Work Through Them: Main Takeaways

Get clear on what makes you unique and what separates you from the rest. Get behind this clear vision, and if you’re unsure, dig into analyzing your personality, experience, and why they make you unique. Don’t self-sabotage yourself just because you don't have a degree or certification, it has nothing to do with things on paper. Go back to energy, experience, and beliefs. When you can combine these three things, your marketing game will improve so much and you will form more authentic connections.
